What We Do

Us Ocean Advocates believe the first step to making an impact is to inform ourselves and to get involved in our local community.

With us, you can help clean up our Scottish beaches, raise money for British NGOs, talk and debate with key speakers, and raise money for causes such as climate justice.

We also host a series of socials to get to know other people driven by the protection and well-being of the world's oceans, like marine-inspired cocktail nights, pub-quizzes, charity raffles and documentary screenings!

Beach Cleans

In September 2019 we hosted our first ever beach clean as a part of the Great British Beach Clean, a Marine Conservation Society citizen science initiative.

We can't to organise many more with the local community this year!

Educational Screenings

In previous years, we've screened Blue Planet 2, Chasing Corals, Sea of Shadows, My Octopus Teacher and a curated selection of TedX talks on marine topics.

Lectures &
Talks

We've been lucky enough to host multiple talks with the Marine Conservation Society, as well as with The Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust. Most recently, we hosted a panel discussion with a host of speakers who are making waves of positive change to our seas, including Professor Murray Roberts and co-founder of Ocean Bottle, Nick Doman.

Discussion
Nights

During our various Discussion Nights, we have debated a variety of controversial topics related to marine conservation, such as "Should indigenous whaling be permitted?", "Should we eat fish?" and "Is ocean tourism more beneficial or detrimental to our oceans?".

We look forward to hosting many more this year. Got a topic you'd like to discuss? Submit them to us here!

Charity
Raffles

Last academic year, we hosted the Ocean Saver's Charity Raffle with Conscious Change and SurfSoc. Together we raised nearly £1000 that was donated to Blue Ventures, a science-led social enterprise that works closely with coastal communities in places where the ocean is vital to their culture and economy.
